Multi-Tech Systems Hosts International Gathering of Cellular Technology Professionals in Minneapolis
PTCRB Members to Discuss Standards for Cellular GSM Devices
MINNEAPOLIS (SEPT. 10, 2009) - Cellular technology industry leaders from around the globe will gather in Minnesota Sept. 14-17, 2009 for the quarterly PTCRB meeting, hosted by Multi-Tech® Systems, Inc, a Minneapolis-based cellular modem and wireless technology manufacturer. For four days, representatives from carriers, test labs, integrators and manufacturers will discuss requirements for new technologies that utilize GSM cellular networks.
As the number of devices being certified by the PTCRB grows exponentially from year to year, and as technology developments are made, the PTCRB standards need to keep evolving. The explosion in M2M (machine-to-machine) communications is one of the main contributors, as more and more devices are getting connected to carrier networks for applications such as smart grid, home and mobile healthcare, transportation and financial transactions at ATMs and remote retail kiosks.
“As a 40 year leader in M2M, the decisions made at these meetings affect how we develop our products,” said Tom Hofstede, Multi-Tech compliance and applications engineer. “Our presence ensures a manufacturer’s point of view is heard and, at the same time, we stay apprised of the latest standards.”
The PTCRB meets to review certification requirements for authorized third-party test labs based on standards, as well the needs of the operators. PTCRB aims to protect the networks from being overtaxed from devices that operate improperly by analyzing such things as antenna characteristics, radio performance and network protocol. The goals are to maintain network performance for optimal customer satisfaction, which should minimize dropped calls, maximize coverage, and maintain network user safety.
“It’s rare for an M2M device manufacturer to take such an active role in the PTCRB, but we at Multi-Tech have a vested interest in the requirements set at these meetings,” said Terry Boe, engineering and certifications manager. “Our embedded and external modems use cellular technology and we invest significantly each year to ensure our products comply with carrier standards. These approvals set us apart in the industry because they streamline the process for our customers.”
M2M capability provides access to real-time data, allowing companies to monitor and manage assets from anywhere in the world, improving device functionality, enabling better and faster decision making, and providing an overall reduction in operating costs. As more and more companies understand the benefits of M2M, they will look to connect their machines and devices to cellular networks, providing a large growth opportunity in data communication needs, and more agenda items for the PTCRB in future meetings.
About PTCRB
PTCRB is a global organization created by Mobile Network Operators to provide an independent evaluation process where GSM / UMTS Type Certification can take place. The technical evaluation is based on standards as well the needs of the Operators, who determine the requirements for the Type Certification Process. The PTCRB authorizes third party laboratories to conduct testing. For over ten years, the PTCRB has demanded high standards from partnerships with Laboratories and Manufacturers; and the collaboration of GSM Operators globally. www.PTCRB.org.
