Vincotech’s A1084’s – the best GSC3 modules ever

Munich, Germany – April 20, 2009 – Vincotech, a leading supplier of GPS receiver and telematics hardware solutions, is starting production of its latest GPS module generation. The A1084-A and A1084-B are the result of years of experience with SiRFstarIII GPS modules. Detailed feedback from customers had a huge impact on their specifications. The emphasis in the new modules is therefore again on low power consumption and support of passive antennas – a feature already realized in the base version A1084-B. The premium version A1084-A even supports switching between two antenna inputs.

Accurate positioning is becoming an increasingly vital part of our world and even of our daily life. Apart from the traditional GPS applications, such as car navigation and car breakdown emergency systems, GPS functionality has expanded into the consumer market, in products such as PNDs, mobile phones, or digital cameras. Similarly, many industrial solutions developed today implement accurate positioning and, very often, intelligent communication. This is precisely the area Vincotech's positioning products and technology address. The state of the art solutions are developed with the mission of identifying and intelligently communicating accurate position.

In the A1084-B, Vincotech has developed probably the best SiRFstarIII based GPS module on a footprint of only 15 x 15 mm². Compared to other modules, this new version now allows the direct connection with passive antennas. To avoid local interferences – naturally passive antennas are located close to the module – the module has been completely shielded. Designs with integrated antennas are thus supported, a feature increasingly seen in telematics and consumer applications. Additionally, the module works with a very low current draw of 26mA in continuous tracking mode. This current draw can be reduced even further by using the different low power mode features of the SiRFstarIII chip. The module shows its strength with its brilliant reception capabilities: with a tracking sensitivity of -159dBm, installation even within the vehicle dashboard is possible. Using the latest SiRF firmware with an improved acquisition sensitivity of as low as -145dBm and allowing the loading of Ephemeris data (the satellites’ orbits), the module features improved start-up behavior, particularly required in telematics applications.

The premium version A1084-A goes one step further. This module offers a second input for external, active antennas. It addresses applications using the external antenna for normal operation but might need the internal one as a fall-back solution (e.g. in case of an emergency, when someone is tampering with the external antenna). This feature is important in safety and security applications. The application itself can then switch from one antenna to the other.

Vincotech offers evaluation kits for testing and evaluating the outstanding features of the A1084 GPS modules. The evaluation kits can be used for e.g. a quick comparison in performance between active and passive antennas, or for a temporary integration into a system.
